Sybil Bernard-Kerrutt — a hairdresser who immigrated from Guyana — started selling bread to friends to support her family. In 1976, she opened her first bakery in Jamaica, and later this flagship location in South Richmond Hill. Housed in a striking yellow and turquoise triangular building on Liberty Ave., Sybil's is impossible to miss. Expect a line even on weekday afternoons.
The Caribbean specialities are extensive and uniformly delicious. Try the pepper pot, goat roti, and pine tarts — but the currant roll is our very favorite thing here.
